In the seventies, Frederic Parke was able to create a three dimensional face while Edwin Catmull was able to create a hand. Together, they made a film known as Futureworld that incorporated these animations.
As time passed by, so many movies have utilized this innovation and this method in order to incorporate them in the special effects of their movies. Now the Star Wars movies from Lucasfilms and of course the Jurassic Park series are just some examples. What they would do is that they would make use of three dimensional animations in order to make special effects.
Now one of the first full three dimensional movies to ever come out in the screen was none other than Toy Story in the year 1995. This was a big thing at that time because it actually the first 3d animation film to make it to the big screen. Because of this one film, there were many more famous ones that followed.
