Learn How To Use A House Rekey Kit

Learning how to change your locks is easy. You just need to remove the cylinder and change the pins. To quickly have new locks you can buy a house rekey kit at your hardware shop. Losing the keys to your home can be stressful because you have no idea who might find them. If you are able to change the locks on your home puts your mind to rest

If you are not the original owner or tenant you do not know who might have keys to your home. Calling the locksmith it can be expensive. Even taking the lock to a shop can be pricey. In addition, if you have more than one lock on your doors or they are not keyed the same, the cost of the locksmith can get pretty high.

With one of these DIY kits you can do the job like the pros at a fraction of what you would pay a locksmith. Kits are available for the common brands of locks. However, the kits are not interchangeable so you might need to get a kit for the different brands that are in your home. With luck all your locks with be the same.

One kit can change as many as 6 locks. If you have more locks to change you can order more pins. The kits can be used for entrance and deadbolt locks and have two keys included. You will also find the tools needed but will have to provide a tweezers and screwdriver. It is important hold on to the original keys to use when you remove the lock cylinder.

Use the right kit for the brand of lock you have. Check your instructions in case they are different between these directions. First, take the knob off using the wire provided in the kit. Insert the wire in the hole on the knob and depress the clip. Now you can pull off the knob. Next, insert your key and turn until unlocked. Finally, take the knob and lock cylinder off.

You can now remove the retainer ring. Using the retainer ring tool, push against the ring and pop the ring off the lock cylinder. With the ring tool from your kit, force the thin ring off the cylinder. Keep the ring since you will need to replace it later. You can now remove the retainer ring.

Now you can take the cylinder plug off. Insert the original key and turn left or right. You can now take the plug out using the plug follower in your kit. Insert the follower and push it through cylinder so you can take out the plug. Make sure you apply constant pressure between the plug and follower to avoid losing the pins and springs.

Take the pins out and insert your new key. Use the tweezers to place the new pins in the cylinder. Follow the color guide in your kit. When you finish inserting the pins you will reassemble the lock by following the steps you just took in the reverse. Make certain you have the tools you need before beginning.
