What To Remember When Visiting A Plant Nursery

By Elizabeth Sullivan

Gardening can be a lot of fun and if you are growing food plants can be a fantastic way to cut your food budget. One of the best sources for plants to add to your property is a plant nursery. These facilities have a range of different flowers, vegetables, greens and fruit plants for you to pick from. Here are a few things to remember when you go shopping for plants to add to your property.

While growing plants may seem to be very difficult it really doesn't have to be. While there are some plants that may have very specific requirements and which will die quickly if those requirements are not met, most flowers, trees and other vegetation will do well once you make sure that their three basic needs are met. One thing that is particularly important is light. It is light that is used for plants to photosynthesize and feed themselves.

Plants also need specific soil conditions. A particular species may need soil that is more alkaline or more acidic. While you can always add in material that will change the acidity of your soil knowing what you are working with is a good starting point that can help you avoid wasted time and money.

Plants of different kinds also need water in order to grow. You need to know approximately how much precipitation they will normally receive and then determine whether or not you will have to add in additional moisture throughout the days or weeks that a particular species is growing.

A good nursery will also have the kinds of plants you want to grow. If you are intending to start a vegetable garden or herb garden you may not find that a nursery that is devoted to ornamental plants will have the selection and expert staff you are looking for. The same is true if you want to have flower gardens and visit a nursery that tends to focus on food plants or trees.

Of course, not every nursery will have plants that you will want to add to your garden or landscape. If you visit a facility and the plants are unhealthy looking or they are infested with insects it might be a good idea to buy your specimens elsewhere. That way you know you are not introducing outside contaminants that could cause your garden to fail.

It's always a good idea to speak with nursery employees about the species you want to purchase. They may be able to let you know which varieties will thrive best in your area and which may be more susceptible to weather and to soil conditions. They will also give you hints about the amount of sunshine your greenery or flowers will need.

Remember that the growing season is not the only time that you can visit a nursery. If you go during the off season it may be possible for you to find products that will help you keep your plants healthy and happy through the winter as well as helping you prepare your garden in the spring. There may also be seeds or house plants that you can work with in order to keep yourself surrounded by greenery and plant life.
