A Summary Of Cosby Abuse Allegations

By Beryl Dalton

Cosby has been an entertainer for decades and recently adopted a father figure with his urge to black kids to remain in school. However, Cosby abuse allegations have dented this image and negated the gains made through numerous mentorship activities. The accusations keep growing which has seen his reputation decline.

Andrea Constand came to the limelight in 2005 when she alleged molestation by the comic. She once directed operations for the girls basketball team at Temple University. In the accusations, she was molested after drugging in 2004 in Pennsylvania. She claims that her statement was rejected by the police. This allegation opened the floor for others to emerge.

Tamara Green has accused the actor and comic of drugging her into unconsciousness and groping her. Court papers cite twelve other anonymous women who have come forward to complain. The accomplished comedian maintains that he has never molested any woman.

Philadelphia Daily News published the story of Beth Ferrier who says that she is one of the anonymous women who filed the case alongside Andrea Constand. Her molestation is said to have taken place in a car in Denver in 1980s. She was drugged before molestation. Though the story was recorded in 2005, the tabloid killed it following pressure by lawyers. Andrea made an out-of-court settlement in 2006.

Barbara Bowman revealed that she was in the anonymous list filed by Andrea. She met the accomplished actor and comedian in 1980, who was by then her mentor. He is said to have assaulted her a number of times in New York and Reno.

The renowned actor returned into limelight in 2014 when Tamara and Barbara repeated their story to Gawker and Newsweek. It is during the same year that NBC announced that they were introducing a new show where the seventy-and-counting years old actor would be part of an extended family as the patriarch. The announcement was made in January. A stand-up special was also announced by Netflix in July with the show slated for November 28th.

A biography written by a former Newsweek and CNN journalist titled Cosby, His Life and Times, caught the attention of the world for failing to mention the accusations. Whitaker Mark in his defense stated that no confirmation was ever made by an independent witness or in court. This meant that he could not verify any of them and as such he could not include them in his book. Whitaker said that the actor cooperated during production of his biography.

The rapist mention in a comedy show by Hannibal Buress in Philadelphia made the clip to go viral online. The renewed attention saw Daily Mail publish the original allegations made by Barbara Bowman where she refers to him as a monster. Buress told reporters that he has mentioned the case on several shows but these instances did not attract any attention.

The accusations have seen cancellation of events and shows featuring Cosby. They include appearances at Queen Latifah Show, the Late Night Show with David Letterman and airing of shows at Netflix, TV Land and NBC. Those who have come to his defense include Whoopi Goldberg and Phylicia Rashad, who worked with him back in the years.
