Best Practices For Lawn Aeration

By Helen Thompson

Having your own lawn can be a good or bad thing. It can be the difference between an average looking house and an awesome looking one. It can also be a pain in the ass entirely. These days a lot of people would rather opt for high rise condos instead of houses. But if you are not really the type to live close to the birds then this could be very useful to you.

There are a bunch of things you need to consider when you opt for a more old fashioned place. One of the very first things you need to immediately consider is lawn aeration. For those who have never heard, according to the academic paper titled lawn aeration littleton co, lawn aeration is allowing the soil to breathe by punching holes in it. Now the question is why. The reason for turning the the grass outside your house into a pin cushion may not be obvious to inexperienced gardeners.

Honestly, some places do not even have to be aerated. But there are also some cases where this is extremely necessary. A common reason is because you spend a lot of time walking around on your grass.

The reason traffic is problematic is because it causes the soil to compact and compacting means it will be less permeable. Soil that is not very permeable does not do a very good job absorbing the different elements that contribute to healthy plant life. If you do not intervene when your garden experiences compacting then you are simply letting your plants starve to death.

Another offender is thatching. A thatch is an outer shell made by plant materials in grass. This also stops nutrients from getting where they need to be.

Now lets discuss how to actually aerate your garden. All you have to do is basically make bunch of holes in the ground. To make these holes you use an aerator. There are two common types, a spike aerator and a plug aerator.

Spike aerators poke openings into the earth with a series of forks while plug aerators remove a core or pull out a plug of dirt and grass to create the holes. Spike aerators have been found to be less effective and they even tend to have the effect of making the soil more compacted because it is basically pushed onto itself. Plug aerators are more effective because the removed plugs go on top of everything instead of into everything.

Before you attempt to aerate you need to to find out if your grass is in growing season. This is the best time to do this because its when the most potential growth can be had. Next you have to make sure the surface is moist enough, it will be hard to get the aerator when the ground is dry. Once everything is set its time to start. It should be fairly straightforward to run your aerator through the area but its best if you run through the most compacted or thatched areas multiple times and break up the pulled out plugs with a rake or lawn mower.

That is it. All the important details have been laid out here in a short an concise manner. There really is no need to go into more detail on the topic unless your case is particularly problematic. The only thing that's really left to do now is if you have not yet, give it a go.
