Street Lighting In Rural And Urban Areas

By Essie Osborn

Sources of light in in the roads or highway are fixed in poles that are tall enough to make sure the light spreads. The street lighting have a given schedule on when they are put on and when they are to put off at night time. A recent improvement that is more economical and efficient are lamps that have sensitive photocells which have the ability to keep the lights on a dark times and switch it off early in the morning.

These lights are not only meant to light up at night, but can also automatically turn on when there is dark weather. These bulbs are normally placed on some tall poles alongside the roads though some may also be fitted on utility poles.

Recent information gotten from researchers who carried out their research on all road users says that the use of lights on the road sides has helped cut down the level of crime. It is said that when there is light many people can walk at night without much fear as compared to when it is dark and also much light keeps away criminals.

This though should be done with concern to which type of lights to put on the roads. Some lamps are so bright that instead of making one feel safe it makes one not to see properly. That excess glare would make one fear all the more. Road lamps should be of uniform light that is able to eliminate shadows that are dark and glare to make an individual feel secure.

The cost incurred in the buying, fixing and making sure they are always maintained in the right condition is big. This may bring out argument that the crimes being eliminated by light cannot be noted and that there is no a specific cost that can be attached to that, the fact remains that we will always need the services of these lights.

Other than cutting down the crime rate, these lights have been seen to make people work for long hours a day for there is no fear of returning to their homes and where they are working and this brings about development. It simply would turn a city into an all round the clock economy. Another consequence of this lighting is reducing of night times accidents which makes sure the people building the economy are secure.

Research has it that enough light in urban areas cuts down the accidents by more than sixty percent. This is true since most accidents are experienced at night which implies that the darkness has something to do with these injuries. This is with consideration that some of the drivers may be irresponsible at night because in many cases there are no cops. It is still believed that as much as they may over speed and do other not allowed behaviors, presence of light reduces accidents.

In conclusion the fact is that enough illumination has the ability to keep the public safe, improve the economic status of a city and so it should be improved. Nevertheless, it has some environmental negative implications but they are less important to the main reason of lighting.
