A Brief History Of Disney World Hotels And Parks

By Frances Kelly

The Disney World complex in Bay Lake and Buena Vista, Florida is located near Orlando. While there are several hotels in these areas, not all are disney world hotels, though some do offer the same benefits. While the area surrounding Disney World originally had a different owner, the area is now owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a subsidiary of the original owner.

Currently, the resort plays home to an outdoor shopping complex, a number of entertainment venues, a camping resort, several golf courses and nine hotels which are not owned by the company. While this is the case, there are 27 themed resort hotels, 2 water parks and 4 theme parks, all of which are owned by the resort.

Originally designed to supplement Disneyland out of Anaheim, California, a park which opened in the mid-1950s, the complex was designed by Walt in the 1960s. Known originally as the Florida project, the intention was to have a diverse and separate identity to that of the park in California.

One of the highlights of the resort is that of EPCOT, which was in the plans from the beginning phase of the project. For, the Experimental Prototype of Tomorrow was a vision which Walt had long hoped of sharing with the world. Now, it is only one of four amusement parks in the complex.

It took a great deal of work to get the Florida government to improve the Reedy Creek Improvement district on which the park would be built. As part of the agreement, Disney gained the rights to create a full autonomous city. Unfortunately, Walt passed away before seeing construction begin on this or any other aspect of the resort.

In the process, the company abandoned earlier concepts for a planned community and village. After which, the company opened Magic Kingdom in 1971. Then, Epcot was completed in 1982 and Hollywood Studios in 1989 with Animal Kingdom opening in 1998. The most recent attraction to any of the parks is that of the new Star Wars Experience.

The resort is one of the most visited vacation spots in the world. With an annual attendance in the millions, the resort is a destination for a number of corporate outings, schools and the public. As such, the resort has become a staple with regards to American vacations and culture.

Whether a corporate employee, student, or individual, the resort has a lot to offer. In addition, children are always welcome at the resort. In fact, there are a number of rides, shows and experiences aimed at a younger audience. As such, the resort can often provide a great deal of fun for families.

Whether traveling with a group, or on a solo mission, there are a number of hotels outside the resort which often come with lower prices tags. While this is the case, it is often recommended that individuals read a number of reviews and testimonials related to off-site lodging. For, while some may offer the same amenities and benefits as those on-site, those are few and far between.
