Important Aspects That You Should Know About Electric Motor Rewinding

By Mandy Cross

Whenever an electric motor fails or starts to show some signs that may lead to its deterioration, the engineers find a way of addressing the issue. They may agree on repairing it at first or decide on replacing it at once depending on the damage. They can also restore it by a process called rewinding. It is economically viable to rewind the motor than replacing. However, some people think that electric motor rewinding may decrease its efficiency.

The materials used in the process can affect the effectiveness of the motors. For example, if you strip a coil from a stator core at high temperatures before winding back, electrical features found on the base may change. This will lead to losses of iron, and it may lower efficiency. As far as an engineer can reverse the electric motor according to its specifications, it is possible to arrive at the initial performance levels.

Experience is the best teacher, and even in the electrical industry, this should not be ignored. Before you take motors for rewinding you should look for qualified personnel within your area. Experienced engineers can work on motors without interfering with other gadgets that may lead to total failure.

Thermal dissipation is the most important characteristic of a motor and the materials used when rewinding should not have any effect on it. An engineer can try insulating tapes and resins. It is now common knowledge among engineers that enhancing reliability and uptime of electric motors is possible.

In most of the technical procedures, a customer should understand that the end result may vary. Before an engineer can start on rewinding the motors, the customer needs to understand that even after rewinding there may be chances where the motors can fail, especially if it had a serious problem. In such circumstances, you may not have a good outcome in spite of paying for the services.

Most of the companies cannot wait for days to replace their motors, and this has forced them to train their engineers on rewinding of motors. In most of these companies the heavy machines used are of age and finding their replacement is a challenge. Every motor has different specifications, and it brings on a challenge when looking for a replacement. It is time-saving to rewind them and increase their efficiency.

In situations where the failed motors have no replacement because of old versions or unavailability in the market, an engineer can try different options. For instance, some manufacturers do not fill stator slots by use of wires. In such a case the engineer can improve its efficiency by keeping the same number of turns and increasing wire size.

Moreover, when your motor is about to undergo rewinding, you make sure that the engineer knows of your expectations. You may come up with an agreement on how the rewinding will be done. You can agree on inspecting the core of the stator before the engineer can strip the windings. Old bearings can be replaced with new ones as a measure to increase efficiency.
