Finding Suitable Replacement Turntable Cartridges

By Karen Wood

If you own a collection of vinyl records you will need to use a record player to listen to your music. From time to time certain components on your audio equipment will become damaged or worn and you will need to replace them. When you are looking for replacement turntable cartridges there are many to choose from and it is advisable to do a little research before you buy.

The cartridge that is fitted to your record deck is just as important as your amp, speakers and connecting cables due to the fact that it picks up the sound from the disc. If the needle is badly worn or damaged in any way it will produce an inferior sound. Damaged cartridges can also destroy the surface of vinyl records and they may be unplayable after sustaining this damage.

Various types of cartridge are available and the main two will either be mono or stereo. Price differ greatly and a basic model will cost around twenty five bucks and a top of the range item will cost in excess of a thousand dollars. You should purchase the best that you can afford and there are products to suit all budgets.

There are a few places where you can purchase audio components and a professional dealer which can be found on high streets is a good place to start. The good thing about a store is that the assistants will be able to help and advise you. If a store cannot supply you with your item when you visit they may be able to place an order for one from one of their suppliers.

The net is also a good place to buy audio components and there are many well established retailers to be found online. You can browse their stock for your item and it is a good idea to have the make and model of your cartridge when you are shopping. The web sites will have some useful reading that you may find helpful and you can contact the supplier if you need any help.

Internet suppliers are also useful as they will list their stock with good quality photos which makes it easier to make comparisons. Some care is needed as many cartridges will look similar but will not be compatible with all decks. If you are unsure about an online purchase it is advisable to ask an expert to avoid buying the wrong item.

You can also get in touch with the manufacturer of your turntable and they may be able to supply you with replacement components. Contacting the factory is especially useful if you are looking for a hard to find item or a product that is no longer available in stores. If they do not sell to the public they will recommend one of their authorized outlets where you can buy.

A record deck cartridge is fragile and it will need to be protected against damage. When you buy a new one and are not fitting it immediately then it should be left in the packaging until you intend to install it. It is useful to keep the receipt for your purchase which will be required if you have to exchange, return or claim a refund on an item.
