Understanding TSA Rules At American Airports

By Mary Russell

While security screenings can often be stressful, it is essential for the safety and security of air travelers. As such, TSA rules are in place which apply to all travelers. Although, those whom have gone through these screenings on a regular basis can often qualify for "trusted traveler, " status. The "trusted traveler" program allows individuals whom frequently travel between the same locations a separate screening area.

Only those whom travel on an ongoing basis can obtain "trusted traveler" status. One reason being, that the agency and policies are now governed by strategy and intelligence planning rather than actions in a moment of crisis. However, if not for this aspect, this program most likely would have never come into existence.

As banned items can change on a daily basis, it is essential to keep up to date by calling or visiting the agency website before starting travel. For example, at times an airport might require the removal of shoes, allow or disallow small amounts of liquid soap, shampoo and other personal hygiene items, or be on a complete lock down against these and other items. As such, by always reviewing these rules before each trip, one can expect a more expeditious and often, more enjoyable time at the airport.

In some cases, individuals may be pulled aside when carrying a misdemeanor or felony charge on record. For, anyone having had criminal dealings in the past is often suspect regardless of whether having served time for the crime or otherwise. In addition, people accidentally passing through security with weapons are often detained and questioned, while the associated items are often confiscated and removed.

As part of the process, TSA employees often use various measures to assure identity and to resolve issues and potential threats at airport security checkpoints. During initial check-in, an officer may ask about travel plans, screen drivers licenses, passports or other identification cards or call for random screening. In addition, these officers also provide security checks going on throughout at the airport ticket stands, gates, waiting areas and other locations on a regular basis.

The safety and security of all travelers is the responsibility of different factions of society. For, while airport security is often focused on check-in, luggage screening and pat-downs, other areas are not always monitored. As such, if a traveler sees something out of the ordinary, then it is the responsibility of the traveler to notify security.

The Transportation Security Administration, custom agents and security guards are often the main defense against threats at airports. However, this does not mean that the public does not have a shared responsibility for helping keep airports safe from attacks or criminal activity. As such, anyone seeing suspicious need contact security as soon as possible when seeing anything out of the ordinary.

When traveling, it is important to remain alert and aware and to report anything out of the ordinary to security. In doing so, it is important not to profile specific individuals based on personal appearance or fashion. For, while there are a number of people out to do others harm, most often these individuals are only displaying the wear of a respective country or religion. At the same time, it is important to report any type of threat or strange behavior as it applies to the airport, airplanes, guests or businesses.
