Know The TSA Travel Rules Before You Fly

By Gregory Thompson

So many people dream of traveling, many times to far flung and exotic places. Unless you plan to travel domestically and drive or take a train, an airplane flight might be in your immediate future. That means that there are certain rules that you will have to follow in order to get to the gate and board your flight. In fact, there are several TSA travel rules that you should know before heading to the airport.

The reason the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA for short, has rules is for safety. Due to increased terrorist attacks and threat of attacks, the government decided that airport travel rules were too lax, and implemented a series of guidelines meant to keep passengers and crews of airplanes alike safe.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will want to check your luggage and get it out of your way. The airline agent will ask you a few easy questions, such as who packed your bags and whether they have been out of your sight for any length of time. As long as nothing is wrong, they will give you your boarding pass.

When you reach the checkpoint area, you will have to place certain items in a plastic bin. Your shoes, any liquids and electronics must all be placed in the bin to be inspected. You can take up to three liquid items, but none can be more than 3.4 ounces. These bottles or containers must be in a clear plastic bag that is a quart size for easy inspection by the agents. You can only bring up to three of these liquids with you, any extras must go in checked luggage.

Next, you will be asked to step through a metal detector and an imaging machine. These imaging machines allow TSA employees to see if you have any nonmetal weapons on your person that the metal detector would not pick up. These are not x-ray machines, so there are no health concerns like you might have with an x-ray machine.

Many people love the imaging machines because they allow you to get screened without having any physical interference or touching. However, you do have the option of asking for a pat down if you do not wish to use them.

Once this is done, you can proceed to your gate and wait to board your plane. Any luggage you checked in with your chosen airline will be put on the plane as long as it passes through screening. All checked luggage also is screened through x-ray machines. If you use a lock, make sure it is a TSA approved lock. This allows them to remove the lock using lock picks without harming it. If you use one that is not approved, then you run the risk of it being damaged.

Make sure you show up two hours early to get through the screening checkpoint, in case there is a line. For international flights, it is advised to show up three hours ahead of time. Doing this will ensure you do not miss your plane and get to your destination safely.
