By Timothy Thompson

A lot of people will own a collection of vinyl and will need a turntable to listen to their music. Modern audio formats are now CD or mp3 and the spares for some equipment may be difficult to find. If you need to find a replacement turntable stylus, there are a few places where you will find what you need and a little research should be done.

A good quality needle is a very important part of you record player as it picks up the sound from the tiny grooves in the record and turns it into the sound. A worn needle will not give you a quality sound and it can also cause a lot of damage to your vinyl records. There are many types of needle and it is essential that you fit one that is compatible to your equipment.

The best place to find what you are searching for is an audio dealer in your neighborhood. Many of the outlets will have a stock of cartridges and single needles for currently made turntables and some older or obsolete models. If they are unable to find you a compatible stylus they will often order one from a manufacturer and you can collect it or have it mailed to you.

The net is also a useful place to find a stylus for your turntable and there are many internet based companies that can supply these. After checking their stock against your items serial number, they can usually find you a suitable match. Some of the sites will do a search from a detailed photo if you do not have any details.

If you are unable to purchase a stylus from one of the internet retailers you can try an online auction site. Many needles are listed and you can often find one that will be compatible to yours for a reasonable price. If your item is expensive or you are unsure if it will be suitable, it is advisable to contact the seller before you bid on it.

Another place where you may find your items is at a junk store or nearly new shop. Many of these places will have audio equipment in there stockroom and you will often find a match. If you do find a suitable one, then it is worth buying the complete record player, in case you require other spares in future.

If the original maker of your turntable is still manufacturing, it is advisable to buy your replacements from them. If they do not make your particular model anymore, they can still usually supply you with items from their stock. The makers can also tell you where to look for compatible parts if they are unable to find a match.

When you have located a needle, it is useful to buy a couple if you can for the future. If you have had some difficulty in finding your item, buying an extra one will save you a lot of time when you need to replace it again. When you are not fitting the new stylus immediately, it should be kept safe to avoid damaging it.
