Discover Mosquito Lagoon With New Smyrna Beach Charter Option

By Guy Stannard

East Central Florida is an amazing location with the best and most versatile angling options found throughout the United States. Whether one enjoys saltwater, freshwater or brackish, all three are readily available. A Daytona Beach fishing charter company is the perfect way to experience all of these excellent choices that are being offered.

There are other qualities that make this particular part of Florida stand out as unique. Mosquito Lagoon is perhaps a top spot chosen by tourists and locals, avid anglers and novice fishermen, alike. Its location at the most northern end of the beautiful Indian River in lovely Volusia County is actually what gives it such a unique appeal.

The location of this particular body of water encompasses both Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Being between these two protected parcels of land that equal more than 167,000 acres combined, means that the lagoon is among the least developed areas in this part of Florida. The fish are plentiful and the wildlife is ample.

The unique conditions of this region work together to allow easy success for novices and casual fishers, yet still give the seasoned angler a sporting challenge. Due to the tidal flows, the water here moves slower, is more shallow and surprisingly clear. This makes casting easier because the fish can be seen without much effort.

This location gives the water an ocean like salinity which causes a few species that would normally go out to open sea to spawn, do that in the lagoon instead. It creates a unique ecosystem that allows the rare chance see Red Mangrove, Spartina and five different types of sea grass all flourishing side by side. There are plenty of flounder, tarpon, spotted sea trout, grouper, crappie, large mouth bass and shad here.

Because of the two wildlife preserves, one has the opportunity to see amazing sights. There is a population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that live in the lagoon. It is also possible to see schools of fish so clearly and to watch the stingrays as they swim along the shallows.
