The Truth About Whitetail Deer Hunts

By Kerri Stout

In his most basest instinct, man is a natural born hunter. He is known to have been chasing after food sources for years, especially during the times when people do not have the more modern and convenient ways of gathering food. Aside from it being a ritual essential for survival, hunting has also provided humankind of the avenue to boost and develop both creativity and inventiveness. In the absence of complicated and sophisticated tools and weapons, man made use of what he can see around him.

Hunting is typically done in the wild, where all kinds of animals abound. They come most in groups and herds, too, which makes them quite easy targets. There are even some species that have grown in so much numbers that they seem to overpower all the others. This has become yet another reason to hunt, to keep the balance of nature. Some even made it a hobby to engage in whitetail deer hunts in Ohio every year.

Among the multitude of animal species that roam the land, hunters favor the deer from all the rest. They are ruminant mammals, along with similar species that sport even toes and chews cud that is regurgitated from their rumen. Aside from the deer, the group comprises of sheep, antelopes, cattle, giraffe, and the like.

There are so many known species of deer as well, making them one of the most populous creature types in all the world. Among the most well known are the black and white tailed varieties, the red colored ones, the reindeer, and the mule deer. Most deer species have the ability to grow new antlers yearly.

These animals are widely distributed all over the world, with representations in most continents except for the Antarctica and Australia. They can also live in ranging biomes, as some are known to survive in tundra while others live well in tropical rainforests. Some transition their habitats from thickets and forests for cover and the savanna and prairies for grazing.

Such deer species are found where there are thickets where they can hide from predators. Among their favorite nesting places are the rainforests, tundras, prairies, and savannas. These places are often frequented by hunters, too, which has pushed these animals to develop more complex evasive measures to avoid getting caught, especially during open season.

For hunting ventures to be successful, one has to have tried and tested moves and methods that will effectively put the prize in the bag. For one, expert hunters never park to close to the area where he wants to hunt. Deers are animals with exceptional ears. If they can hear you while you are still on your way, they will have time to hide. Park at a respectable distance of 200 meters instead.

They have really good noses, too, and they can sniff you out if you are not careful. To avoid detection, keep your stand high, especially when hunting at the lee slope of the ridge. A stand that is high enough will be carried over the trees instead of going downward, so your prey will never know where you are.

Calls are very important in the success of the hunt. A good hunter knows all the kinds, and is able to apply them at appropriate times. This will also save you the time and effort of chasing after the animal when you can call them to you anytime.
