The Benefits Of Growing Cycads

By Nancy Phillips

Gardens provide a sanctuary for people to relax and spend quality time. However, it is not easy to have a good garden unless one puts in a lot of effort, and that is why many would not bother to have one. Studies have shown that there are some plants that can be planted in the garden that require low maintenance, and Growing Cycads would be the way to go.

People usually think that to have property that is of high value one has to invest a lot of time in gaining that. Cycads are the exact opposite of that, as they are very easy to grow and their appearance is appealing to the eye. The best conditions to grow them would be in well-aerated soil and one that does not retain much water, as too much water will cause the roots of the plant to rot out.

As these plants grow slowly, it is important to make sure that their roots are not disturbed once they mature. This means that if they are being grown for the landscape, they should be transplanted when they are young. If they are being planted in the house, one should make sure that the plant never dries up, and watering should be done at least two times a week.

It is important to understand that different species of cycads require different growth conditions. Some need to be placed in more light than others and some need more water than others. When going out to buy the seedlings to plant, one should talk with the experts who sell them so that they are educated on the best ways to care for them and ensure proper growth.

There are some species that can be consumed once they become mature enough. However, before preparing them for eating, there are some processes that should be followed in order to remove the bad toxins. They are a good source of food for chicken so farmers are encouraged to grow them to supplement the other chicken feeds.

Some of the plants as well can be used to make medical products. The leaves and stems may be harvested and crushed then put under exceptional processes to manufacture the medicines. Some of the medications have been proven to sort out issues that affect the skin like rashes as well as eliminating scars left behind.

The leaves of some species have special fibers on them that are great for making mattresses and even material for making clothes. The fibers are also soft enough to be used in pillows, because they do not have side effects. Amenities like shopping baskets and fiber hats can be made from the leaves and they last long because of the toughness of the material.

This species of plants has also been known to have nitrogen-fixing properties in the soil that makes the soil more fertile and suitable for growing other plants. When matured, the big species can be cut down and their stems can be used as a building material. They are almost extinct so to save them from completely running put, more people should consider having them.
