Some Simple Tips To Consider When Choosing A Phono Cartridge

By Jerry Young

Magnetic cartridges are transducer types that are being utilized in the record playback or often called as analog sound recordings in record players. A cartridge may also be referred to as pickup. This is a device that is an electro mechanical type designed for converting the vibrational energy into an electrical energy. It contains stylus and this is mounted either permanently or temporarily, meaning it is removable. The tip of a stylus serves as the contact to record groove. An electrical signal will be amplified and will be converted into a sound by loudspeakers.

Listening to some music recordings using the vinyl recordings became popular ever since in the 1950s. Nowadays, the invention has already been evolving and has made with a lot of different types. However, the use of vinyl is still popular today but has an improved audiophile and DJ community in hi fidelity. One important thing that need to be considered is choosing the cartridge. So here are some easy tips when choosing the phono cartridge that will allow you on selecting an appropriate component to suit your needs.

Determining your budget. The component is very similar to a large stereo system. If you are going to allocate the budget for it, it must reflect on the whole systems total costs. One good suggestion for right budgeting is to start on allocating only a 10 percent of the total expenditure for the component.

Selecting the right type for the mount of tonearm. The tonearm of a turntable falls into four different categories and the cartridge to be purchase must be compatible with the type of mount. The standard mount is the most commonly used type. This contains a head shell which is large and flat and located under the cartridge, secured by two screws located a half inch apart.

The P mount is only common for use in low end turntables. The cartridges part at the rear end will be plugged into a tonearm, secured with one screw only. A convertible mount is not common but may be adapted to fit in either the standard or the P mount. An integrated mount will be using propriety cartridges and cannot be allowed for swapping with other models. It is common for use in the DJ turntables.

Selecting the type to be purchased, either the moving coil or the moving magnet cartridge. The modernized phono cartridges usually are magnetic. The two main components used are small metal coils and magnets which are related with each other for producing the electrical signal. Common designs that are commonly used are moving magnet cartridges. The models are either high end or low end.

The moving coil cartridges are where the magnet is going to be fixed and a coil is moved. These types are preferred mostly by audio enthusiasts for obtaining the superior sound. These are typically available in high end models only which are expensive. Using these is suggested that MC amplifier is separated.

Comparing the shapes of styluses from different cartridges. Styluses are needle like materials that will actually touch the vinyl records. Modernized types are made of diamond and come into different sizes and shapes.

The cheaper ones are usually made of spherical shapes, offering only a low quality of sounds. An elliptical stylus offers a greater contact area, thus, requiring lesser tracking force. Micro line, linear contact, and biradial styluses are types which are difficult to manufacture and are more expensive as well.
